Welcome to Part 1 of a short series of blogs that I’ll be posting about my recent vacation! As an overview, I’ll be posting about the highlights of my trip – including details about the hotel I stayed at, shopping and some great sightseeing options if you happen to be traveling to San Francisco!
Thanks to some great deals on flights that I found online with Hawaiian Airlines, and excellent timing, I was lucky enough to snag a flight to San Francisco to celebrate my birthday!
The slight downfall of booking discounted tickets, sometimes, is that your flight might end up being at a weird time…in my case…you’ll arrive at your destination pretty late at night. (You know, like 9:30 pm!)
Luckily, we booked the SuperShuttle online prior to our trip, so we didn’t have to worry about figuring out transportation from the airport to our hotel! *thumbs up* It was a little bit of a walk to find the area where the shuttle would pick us up from, but it was smooth sailing from there. A great thing about their service is that you can view where your shuttle is online!
After checking in at Hotel Nikko San Francisco, we headed up to our room where we saw that we had an AWESOME view of the city! You can [kinda] see Union Square from this photo 🙂 It’s to the left of the Macy’s building.
Since we got in so late, we rushed out to get a bite to eat at a Thai restaurant across the street that was open late, unpacked a bit and then went to sleep so that we could rest up before our next full day!
The weather on January 29th [my birthday!], involved clouds and rain – which is probably normal for San Francisco! We grabbed the umbrella I packed, threw on our coats and headed out to make the best of our first day in the city.
Going on a trip to San Francisco was a birthday treat in itself, so all I really wanted to do on my birthday was walk around in the city and [window] shop! I love walking around in different cities that I visit just to take in my surroundings and check out stores I wouldn’t usually be able to.
Some of the stores I stopped into were – Uniqulo, G-Star Raw, Christian Louboutin, Crate & Barrel, DSW, The Container Store, and…the list goes on 😉
The cloudy picture I posted above isn’t actually a good representation of the weather that day. IT WAS POURING RAIN!!! I was so happy to have brought my trench coat, because I got the most use out of it on my trip! (You really don’t get much use out of a trench coat, living in Hawaii!)
Walking through Crate & Barrel and borrowing one of their mirrors 🙂

I definitely would have taken more pictures, but I was too worried my phone would get damaged with the rain! And…it was just a mess. Not to worry, this was the only day that we caught some rainy weather. More pictures to come, I promise!
What I love to do when traveling is just walking around in an unfamiliar city and taking in what the environment feels like. I am so intrigued with just walking around and looking at everything, even if it’s not a landmark or monument of any kind – just being somewhere else is so awesome!
After walking around for pretty much the entire day, we grabbed a quick lunch and headed back to the hotel to rest before dinner!
I decided to have dinner at the restaurant in Hotel Nikko, called ANZU, because you know sometimes you get lazy on your birthday and don’t really want to go out somewhere. (Well, I do anyway!) And don’t you just love it when the restaurant you have dinner at for your birthday gives you a complimentary dessert?!
(I’ll post more about the dining experience in my next post when I go into detail about the room and my stay at Hotel Nikko!)
I just HAD to take advantage of this super cool mirror situation near the elevators!

Little did I know, there was a big surprise waiting for me back in my hotel room! Long story short, I’m engaged! And I’ll be planning to work on some wedding planning related posts on the blog!
